Nestled in the picturesque Gallatin Valley of Montana, Agrostis Inc. creates a harmonious and sustainable landscape that compliments the rustic character of the site.
The architecture, designed by Messana O’Rorke, crafted a house that harmonizes with its rugged mountain surroundings and respects the traditional character of nearby residences, all while maintaining our meticulous approach to space planning and design.
Inspired by the simple vernacular homes inspired from the early 1900’s, the design balances contextual sensitivity with contemporary flair.
To reduce the visual impact of the 5,000-square-foot residence, Messana O’Rorke divided the structure into four volumes connected by see-through glass bridges, creating the impression of separate pavilions arranged in a line.
With a deep respect to the existing landscape, Agrostis Inc, developed new interventions to enhance the natural surroundings rather than detract from the environment.
By carefully selecting native plants and materials, Agrostis, Inc. has created a seamless transition between the residential spaces and the expansive meadows and mountains beyond.
As a key component to the landscape design, Agrostis, Inc. meticulously chose a variety of grasses, shrubs, and wildflowers that are indigenous to the region, creating a landscape that is both sustainable and visually appealing.
These plants are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions, reducing the need for irrigation and maintenance while providing habitat for local wildlife.
Within the architecture, carefully positioned openings within the home frame the stunning views in the distance.
Carefully positioned plantings and hardscape elements extend the indoor space, inviting residents and visitors to explore and experience the landscape from different perspectives.
The use of natural stone for pathways and seating areas further integrates the design with the environment, creating a cohesive and inviting outdoor space.
