Nestled beside a secluded lagoon along a pristine stretch of Northern California’s coastline, Boxleaf Design balances symmetrical composition with lush naturalistic plantings.
Designed to maximize the lush mountain views, indoor and outdoor spaces foster strong connections to the vibrant, social life of the lagoon.

To complement the coastal environment, the design focuses on creating fluid transitions between the built environment and the surrounding landscape, ensuring the outdoor spaces blend effortlessly with the coastal scenery.
Utilizing local grasses, shrubs, and trees to mimic the textures and colors of the surrounding cliffs and dune, the gardens feature deer-resistant, drought-tolerant, and fire-resistant plantings.
Located near the lagoon, is a series of carefully curated outdoor living spaces that provides an extension to covered outdoor living space.
The design includes multiple seating areas, an outdoor dining space, and a cozy fire pit—all positioned to maximize views of the Pacific Ocean and capture the gentle sea breeze.
With carefully selected materials to age gracefully in the coastal environment, weather-resistant wood, natural stone, and rust-proof metals were used to withstand the salty air and coastal weather.
The materials used throughout the project embrace the patina that develops over time, adding character to the space and ensuring longevity.

Sustainability, used at the core of this project, goes beyond the use of native plants.
The architecture, designed by Butler Armsden Architects, incorporates innovative water management strategies, including permeable surfaces, rain gardens, and efficient irrigation systems to help manage stormwater runoff and conserve water—a critical consideration in Northern California’s often arid climate.
Moreover, Boxleaf Designs has integrated recycled and locally sourced materials wherever possible. The choice of materials not only reduces the project’s carbon footprint but also ensures a connection to the local context, creating a sense of place that feels both authentic and enduring.
Emphasizing the fluid movement of people through the landscape, indoor and outdoor connections allow natural light to flood interiors.
This artistic expression of California’s coastal charm incorporates sculptural elements and custom-built furniture that reflect the organic shapes and textures found in nature.
These pieces, often crafted by local artisans, serve both a functional and aesthetic purpose, adding layers of interest to the space.
