Nestled on a rocky hillside in Austin, Texas, Word + Carr Design Group creates textured gardens that showcase a striking balance between the landscape and architecture.
Embedded in the existing surroundings, the landscape exhibits distinct boundaries from the crushed gravel while softening the facade constructed from board formed concrete.

Presented by numerous challenges such as steep topography and invasive plant species, the architects, Mell Lawrence Architects, addressed these complexities through careful planning.
Embracing the natural features of the land, invasive species such as ligustrum and jasmine were removed, helping to revive the area’s natural beauty.
After addressing the sites unique features, the use of negative space played a pivotal role in shaping the circulation and experience of the landscape, framing key views and allowing openings to encourage new possibilities.

The design prioritizes the idea of living with nature, not just beside it.
Throughout the project, drought-tolerant native plants were used to restore the site’s ecology.
By focusing on native plants and sustainable practices, Word + Carr Design Group created a low-water, low-maintenance garden that not only meets the practical needs of the homeowner but also restores and celebrates the exquisiteness of the Texas landscape.

Every part of the home, including its materials and open spaces, is intended to create a closer relationship with the outdoors.
The clean lines of board-formed concrete architecture are contrasted with a serene, textural landscape that features raw steel, limestone, and gravel.
