Designed to disappear into its coastal plot in northeast Brazil, Studio MK27 creates five separate living volumes that are covered with a rustic eucalyptus pergola.
Crafted to blend to the boundaries of design, The Sands House seamlessly integrates with its coastal surroundings while boasting an exceptional panorama views of the Atlantic Ocean.
What lies between the series of five volumetric living spaces, are outdoor living spaces which are thoughtfully designed to encourage relaxation and contemplation.
Consisting of private terraces and courtyards, the interconnected spaces provide intimate settings for alfresco dining or simply soaking in the sun.
The pergola’s eucalyptus branches create a captivating striped pattern in the sunlight that filters through them, highlighting the dynamic and changing nature of the landscape.
Elevated above the ground, the wood deck connects the areas together allowing for movement between spaces.
The architectural language of “On the Sand” is characterized by clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and a profound respect for natural materials.
Studio MK27 has employed a palette of locally sourced materials such as wood, stone, and glass, ensuring that the project remains in harmony with its coastal environment.
The use of these materials not only enhances the visual appeal of the residences, but also serves as a testament to the firm’s commitment to sustainable design practices.

One of the most striking features of “On the Sand” is its seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.
While concrete structures are thoughtfully placed beneath an expansive pergola, landscape architect Isabel Duprat created a landscape that coexists harmoniously with the environment.
Before construction began, Musk Trees native to the site were meticulously preserved during the construction of our residence.
The landscape integrates a sandbank adorned with indigenous flora, enhanced by selectively placed additional trees to create inviting shaded areas.
Before initiating construction and enabling machinery access, Isabel Duprant planted 90 diverse trees, including notable species like:
- Monkeypod Tree (Samanea saman)
- Bahia Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra)
- Brazilwood (Paubrasilia echinata)
- Star Apple Tree (Chrysophyllum cainito)
- Guiana Chestnut (Pachira aquatica)
- Coast Cottonwood (Hibiscus tiliaceus)
- Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis)
- Rose Apple (Syzygium jambos)
Rather than imposing itself upon the environment, the architecture serves as a complement to nature’s grandeur, enhancing rather than detracting from the coastal scenery.
The design strategically orients all living spaces northeast, offering unobstructed views of one of the most picturesque beaches.
Lush gardens and native vegetation adorn the property, creating a tranquil oasis where residents can retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
From the moment one sets foot on the property, it becomes evident that “On the Sand” created by Studio MK27 and Isabel Duprat is more than just a residential development—it is an immersive experience.
